A bottle marked “fish oil 1,000 mg” does not necessarily provide 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA. Before comparing omega-3 products, find the actual EPA and DHA amounts and the number of capsules in the labeled serving.
This guide covers food and supplement choices, with Korean label terms explained in English. Reviewed September 11, 2026. For product classification, see our Korean supplement buying checklist.
Fish offers more than an omega-3 number
Fish supplies nutrients such as protein, vitamin B12, and selenium alongside fats. An oil capsule does not reproduce that entire food. When planning meals, consider the fish species and preparation rather than trying to convert a portion directly into capsules. The FDA/EPA fish guide explains nutrients and choices by mercury level, particularly for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and children.
Species matter: The guide places Atlantic mackerel and Pacific chub mackerel among its lower-mercury “Best Choices,” while king mackerel is a “Choice to Avoid.” A listing that simply says “mackerel” needs more detail before applying that advice. This is U.S. guidance; also follow local fish advisories where you live.
EPA and DHA occur in seafood and fish oil. Algal oils provide DHA, and some also provide EPA. Flaxseed oil supplies a different omega-3, ALA. Do not treat an ALA number as a matching EPA-plus-DHA amount. See NCCIH’s overview of omega-3 sources.
Compare EPA plus DHA on the same serving basis
NIH ODS explains that fish oil products vary widely in their EPA and DHA content. Total oil weight and the amounts of these fatty acids are separate measurements. Check the ODS omega-3 fact sheet for background.
Read the active amounts inside the oil total
1,000 mg fish oil
EPA 200 mg + DHA 100 mg
= 300 mg EPA + DHA
2,000 mg fish oil
EPA 400 mg + DHA 200 mg
= 600 mg EPA + DHA
If the label already reports values per two-capsule serving, do not multiply them by two again. If it lists only a combined EPA-and-DHA total, record that total without inventing a split.
What to record from a Korean product label
| Label detail | Your check |
|---|---|
| EPA 및 DHA의 합 EPA + DHA | Record the combined amount and whether it is per capsule or daily serving. |
| 1일 섭취량 Daily intake | Record the number of capsules or measured portions. |
| 원재료명 Ingredients | Check the oil source, capsule ingredients, and allergen information. |
| 섭취 시 주의사항 Intake cautions | Read the warnings for the exact product. |
| 보관방법 · 소비기한 Storage · Use-by date | Check the required conditions and actual package date. |
Ask for a full label photo if the listing hides these details. Save the product name and manufacturer with your comparison; a similarly named overseas version may have a different label.
A supplement is not the same as a prescription product
Omega-3 prescription medicines are used for certain patients with very high triglycerides. Their composition, testing, and regulation differ from typical supplements, so their results cannot simply be assigned to a retail bottle. Evidence for seafood and supplements also differs by health outcome. Read NCCIH’s evidence review.
For an advertised benefit, ask which formulation and population were studied. If your goal is treatment of a diagnosed condition, discuss options with your clinician instead of choosing a bottle from a general “heart health” claim.
Check medicines and avoid choosing a high dose yourself
ODS notes potential medicine interactions, including with anticoagulants such as warfarin. Two large trials using 4 g daily for several years found a slightly higher risk of atrial fibrillation in people with cardiovascular disease or elevated cardiovascular risk. That is a trial finding, not a suggested intake or proof that every dose has the same risk. Discuss supplementation with a clinician if you take medicines or have a heart-rhythm history. See ODS safety and interaction information.
Cod liver oil can also contain vitamins A and D; include those when checking overlap with other supplements. Common omega-3 supplement side effects include unpleasant taste and digestive symptoms. NCCIH covers these cautions.
Before buying: Compare the delivered price per labeled day only after checking ingredients, serving instructions, and suitability. A larger oil number or a lower price does not answer whether you need the product.
