Updated October 5, 2026. Windows 11 26H2, also called the Windows 11 2026 Update, began rolling out on September 29. Availability is gradual: an announcement does not mean every PC will receive the update immediately.
This guide explains how to check for the update, what to review before installing, and how to separate a delayed rollout from an installation problem. It is based on Microsoft’s documentation, not a hands-on test of every PC configuration.
Who can get Windows 11 26H2?
Microsoft identifies eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices as the initial upgrade path. These releases share a servicing foundation, so qualifying PCs can move to 26H2 through a small enablement package rather than a full operating-system reinstall. Device eligibility and compatibility still matter. See the official launch announcement.
Before you start
- Make a separate copy of important documents, photos and project files. Open a few copied files to check that the backup is usable.
- Save your work and choose a time when a restart will not interrupt a meeting or deadline.
- List the peripherals you depend on, especially USB audio equipment, and check the manufacturer’s support information.
- For a work or school computer, follow your IT department’s update instructions.
How to check for the update
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- To receive the release earlier, Microsoft says to turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- If 26H2 is ready for your PC, Windows Update may begin downloading and installing it automatically; follow any prompts shown. Save your work before restarting.
- After restarting, search Start for winver and open it to check the installed Windows version.
Microsoft documents version checking in its Windows Update Assistant guidance. Record your version before and after the upgrade so you can tell whether a feature update actually completed.
Why is 26H2 not showing up?
A missing offer alone is not proof that Windows Update is broken. Microsoft is staging availability and may apply compatibility safeguards. Organization-managed devices can also follow a deployment schedule set by an administrator. Use Windows Update’s actual message to decide the next step; this guide does not recommend bypassing a safeguard.
Known issues to check before installing
Update checked October 5, 2026: Microsoft added an AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio issue on October 2. Some apps may fail to open or close while playing audio after KB5124010, released September 22, or later updates. Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 are listed as affected. The status is Confirmed; Microsoft says a fix is planned for a future update. Apps that rely on Windows’ older audio-decoding component are more exposed; this does not mean every media app or game is affected.
The other listed issues—USB Audio Class 1.0 devices, domain trust and virtual-desktop sign-in—remain Mitigated, not universally resolved. Review the live Microsoft issue details for your configuration. These are separate problems: an audio-app crash is not automatically a USB-device fault. On a managed PC, give your IT team the installed update and affected application rather than changing domain or security settings yourself.
After installation: a practical check
- Open the applications you use every day and one recent document.
- Test speakers, microphone, camera and printer if you use them.
- Confirm that you can connect to the network and access required work resources.
- If a problem appears, record the exact message, installed version and affected device. Match it against Microsoft’s release-health guidance before trying unrelated fixes.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to reinstall Windows?
The announced path for eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs uses an enablement package. A clean installation is not the normal first step for this upgrade.
Is this a recommendation to upgrade every computer today?
No. First check whether the update is offered, whether a listed issue affects your setup, and whether your essential applications and peripherals have appropriate support.
