A first consultation is a chance to decide whether treatment fits your health needs and circumstances. Bring a short record of your history and questions so the conversation can cover safety, practical costs and follow-up.
Reviewed September 11, 2026. This adult appointment guide uses NIDDK guidance and US prescribing information. Eligibility, available products and payment arrangements differ by country. A checklist cannot determine whether a medicine is suitable for you.
Bring your goals and medication list
NIDDK identifies potential benefits, side effects, current health conditions, other medicines, family history and cost as factors in choosing treatment. It also emphasizes that medication works alongside eating and activity support. NIDDK medication guidance.
- Your goals: What health or daily-life changes do you hope to achieve?
- Previous treatment: Note approaches you have tried, what helped and what was difficult.
- Medication list: Include prescriptions, over-the-counter products, vitamins and supplements, with names and doses if available.
- Existing records: Bring relevant results or clinic letters you already have. Ask the clinician which new checks, if any, are needed.
Mention these before the treatment decision
Tell the clinician about pancreatitis, gallbladder or kidney problems, severe stomach-emptying problems, diabetic eye disease and serious medication allergies. Mention insulin or sulfonylureas because combined treatment can increase hypoglycemia risk.
Be specific about a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2: these are US-label contraindications. They are not interchangeable with every type of thyroid condition. Also disclose planned surgery or procedures involving anesthesia or deep sedation. Mounjaro prescribing information; Wegovy prescribing information.
Discuss pregnancy, breastfeeding and pregnancy plans. For weight management, Wegovy’s US label specifies stopping at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Tirzepatide’s US label advises non-oral contraception or an added barrier method for four weeks after starting and after every dose increase when oral contraceptives are used. Ask for advice specific to your situation. Wegovy pregnancy information; Mounjaro contraception information.
Questions to ask before leaving
- Suitability: What makes this option appropriate for me, and what alternatives should we consider?
- Product: Which exact medicine, formulation and device are being prescribed? Can you show me the instructions?
- Monitoring: What are our treatment goals, and when will we review progress and tolerability?
- Symptoms: Which side effects need a call, and which need urgent care?
- Interruptions: Whom should I contact if I miss treatment, cannot obtain it, or want to stop?
- Costs: What is included in the quoted price—medicine, visits, tests and support? What might change later?
- Support: What nutrition and activity support is available?
Ask for written product-specific instructions. Do not use another person’s dose schedule or device instructions as your own.
